Quick bio:

Shauna is a documentarian, researcher, and digital strategist with over ten years of experience working at the intersection of new media production and advocacy. In her current role as the Director of Digital Storytelling at the award-winning non-profit, Define American, Shauna and her team utilize data and research tools to inform digital strategies to shift the narrative on immigration. The goal of this work is to develop infrastructure for the non-profit field to better combat xenophobia on social media. Her research has been featured on MSNBC, Politico, dozens of podcasts, and has been referenced on the floors of the United States Congress. Prior to this role, Shauna worked as a producer in television and digital media, with projects that have been featured on MTV, CNN, Nickelodeon, and PBS, including Emmy and Shorty award nominated work. She has also produced dozens of short films and articles that have been published with prominent brands such as The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The Huffington Post, Los Angeles Magazine, Teen Vogue, Upworthy and NowThis. Shauna graduated from Oberlin College with a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology and Classical Studies, and is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Media, Culture and Communications at New York University.

Digital Media Research

In an original research report “Immigration Will Destroy Us’ and Other Talking Points” with Define American, my team examined the role of anti-immigration narratives on YouTube in shaping American views of migrants and refugees.

I am a co-author on the report, and author of the corresponding style guide for video content creators who are interested in getting involved.

Digital Content

Since 2015, I have led and collaborated on dozens of projects with internal and external digital teams to produce media products (video, social campaigns, influencer integrations) that explore some of the most pressing social issues of our time: immigration, race, incarceration, climate, and LGBTQIA+ equity (to name a few.)

As a producer, director, and editor, I have had the privilege to meet incredible people across the United States, and to share some of their stories.

Events

Over the years I have planned and executed dozens of events, from panel discussions, virtual gatherings, to multi-day convenings.

TV Stuff

My experience in television was both in production and post-production for non-scripted documentary style programming. My credits include shows such as Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown, PBS’s Mind of a Chef, Nickelodeon’s Take Me to Your Mother, HGTV’s House Hunters, and MTV’s Emmy-Nominated White People. On White People my role was senior associate producer and casting lead. It was a project that led to many more exploring race and identity in the United States.
